Happy International Flag Burning Day!

Real holidays have real songs.

I declare my independence from tick and ric rac nationalism.
By my friend Paul Gailiunas and The Troublemakers.

We might get arrested, we might get spit on, so here is a song to explain our point of view.
We'll tell you why it so thrills us to see all those colorful flags being set on fire.

On the 4th of July we declare our independence.
Independence from the greatest evil around.
That is the evil of nationalism.
It separates us and crushes us down.

Flag Burning Day, Flag Burning Day, burn the scourge of nationalism away.
Flag Burning Day, Flag Burning Day, happy International Flag Burning Day.

We burn the stars and the stripes and the maple leaf.
The Palestinian and Israeli flags.
The hammer and the sickle and the lone star of Texas.
We love to dance 'round the smoldering rags.

Flag Burning Day, Flag Burning day, burning those hateful borders away.
Flag Burning Day, Flag Burning day, happy International Flag Burning Day.

We declare that we're citizens of the whole world.
Don't pay no respect to our borders or armies.
'Cuz patriotism is the flip side of racism, why we any better just 'cuz of where we're born.

Flag Burning Day, Flag Burning Day, burn the scourge of nationalism away.
Flag Burning Day, Flag Burning Day, happy International Flag Burning Day.
Flag Burning Day, Flag Burning day, burning those hateful borders away.
Flag Burning Day, Flag Burning day, happy International Flag Burning Day.

so happy to see others share my idea of a "true" national holiday, although being up north i celebrated flag burning day a couple days ago with a little billy brag and a whole lotta gardening.

ps: i think you're awesome. hope you had a lovely flag burning day, full of non-nationalist relaxing and anti-state wonderfulness.

  2. How about one flag? The flag of interdependence? A then of course burn that too! How Zen!

  3. Burn 'em all, eating cookies all the while! I think I love you, and I *know* I love the song!

  4. I celebrated by making a miser allecha and gomen, more or less from Papa Tofu. I used beet greens and kale for the gomen because I already had them. Turned out great :)

  5. Those cookies look incredible. Chocolate chips, Oreos, and coconut? Forget about it...

  6. Those look like the perfect marriage of cute and delicious. I recently made the pakupaku aloo gobi, and it was awesome!

  7. I forgot to tell you, someone brought a Kittee Ethiopian recipe to the International Flag Burning Day party & it was DELICIOUS! I can't wait to have one made by YOU!

  8. those cookies look & sound super stellar! hooray for flag burning day cookies - they look gloriously wonderful (and you better believe i'm make'n some for myself)!

    dayyyyum! :D

  9. Yeah to the song, the cookies, and the holiday!

  10. Ha! I used to burn a flag every year on the 4th! I'd still do it but I've been lazy. And this year, I spent the day with my boyfriend's military family and they'd probably hate me forever cause they wouldn't understand. But my parents never had a problem with dad's kind of an anarchist himself.

  11. Ha the title of the post! thanks for the recipe, I'll be trying these cookies out as they look delicious.

  12. Yay!!!

I wish I would have had some of these cookies to munch on throughout the day (chocolate chips, oreos and coconut in one cookie...mind blowing deliciousness)!

    You are the awesomest, Kittee!

  13. Hear, hear. And here's to free speech
and to not being afraid to exercise it.

  14. You have a nice blog...keep up the good job:)

  15. I have all of those ingredients. Can't wait to make them.

  16. Wow...on the few chance occassions I have to get on the internet and look at vegan website ( is kinda hard to constantly be on the web WHEN YOU ARE DEPLOYED TO IRAQ!), this is what I run into...Being in the military and looking at how other's (just can't bring myselt to call anyone who burns the flag an American)is hard to deal with. I guess that IS what we in the military fight and die for, so that people can burn something that is sacred to so many. Your ability to disregard the flag and what is stands for continues to represent what is wrong in American and with our youth. I am by no means a basher of the liberties of others (hence that is why I joined the military - Marine Corps to be exact- so that others can have the freedom to make choices and decisions on their own). You and your flag burning friends are a worthless shameful lot that has been allowed to abuse your freedom as an 'American'. i would only hope that you would be able to come to understand why what you do is silly, ignorant and disrespectful to so many. Well let me go continue to defend your freedom so that you can burn more flags!
    Capt, USMC
PS - Just to let you know I am not so old, gun toting, racist, gun club belonging white male. Actually I am a black, tree hugging vegan, freedom of speech having, female. However, I respect the flag and those who serve.

  17. Hey, anonymous, did you really understand what the flag song is about? I mean, do you respect the flag of North Korea? Do you respect militant nationalism in non-U.S. countries? No? Didn't think so. Also, contrary to the belief of many U.S. citizens, America encompasses far more than just the United States. Chill out, yo.

  18. A very belated happy flag-burning day to you, too. I exercised my non-nationalist tendencies by not celebrating the 4th of July in any way, shape, or form. But cookies would have been nice.

  19. Kittee

These cookies look so good. By the way, the orbweavers here are red, white and yellow. And it is 102 here today. Yikes! In other words, Texas is as hot as hell! Have a terrific weeekend.

  20. Dear Captain,
What have you been eating lately?

I am not sure if you are a real person, or if you even read through all of the lyrics to the song. International Flag Burning Day is not just about burning the American flag, the song is about burning all flags and creating a world community where people are not concerned about repressive borders.

The primary freedom you're defending is the freedom of the military industrial complex to make more money. Burning the flag is about protesting the abuses of the MI complex, not disrespecting you, unless you think making and wasting money on weaponry is a way more important in your life than whether someone is killed or hurt.

I don't believe that burning the American flag is an abuse of my freedom, or a symptom of my youth. It's constitutionally protected speech, as is the general right to say things that are silly, ignorant and disrespectful to so many others. While burning the flag is silly to some, it's definitely serious to a lot of others. It's so serious, the Supreme Court had to protect it. It's more important to be able to burn a flag than be prohibited from doing it. What could be more American than celebrating the rule of law?

I hope you come back to America soon and healthy.

  21. i just tried making these cookies (non-vegan though) and they are absolutely delicious! hoping for a good reaction when i bring them to my friend's cottage this weekend!

  22. On a quasi-related note - I took some of your oatmeal chocolate cherry cookies to a barbecue (exercising the right to hold barbecues for absolutely no reason) and people nearly levitated with joy. Thank you!

  23. I had to revisit this today because it's beautiful.

  25. Found this six years later. I'm looking for the video of the song, but I'm glad I found this!
