Some good reasons not to wear or use wool and thumbholes. Thumbholes are good.
Have you ever played, "If all the food in the world was suddenly vegan, what would you eat first?" It can be an annoying game depending on who's askin', but it's also good for long waits, car trips or pap smear distractions. Anyway, my answer would be, "Noro Kureyon." No, I don't want to eat this gorgeous Japanese wool, but I do have strong desires to drape it though my fingers, cast it onto my Grandma's needles, and knit it until I'm color blind and sick to my stomach. Then I'd wear the shit out of it.
I'm one of those lucky vegans who isn't haunted by cheese cravings, and who's pretty good at whipping together whatever my heart and tummy desire. But unfortunately, there isn't a cashew tree in this world, who can fully release me from my intense wool cravings. Or not completely. Yet.

What I particularly like about Kureyon is that it comes in gorgeous, intense colors that self-pattern and stripe as you use the yarn. It's cool stuff, and I've been searching for a similar non-animal sourced alternative for a long time.

Look at that yarn! So pretty. So fun to knit with.
I recently shared my yarn yearning with my dear, darling, awesome detective of a friend, Cynthia, and what did she do? She immediately located two acrylic Noro knock-offs that pretty-much made my liver and appendix spontaneously discharge into pixie dust. In case this will also make your internal organs go wonky and sully your underpants:

It got cozier when Ms. Chicken stopped poking me in the gut, too. Also, you might like to know this sweater cost me less than $20 to make.

That sweater is amazing! I wish my knitting skills were up to it, but I've never progressed past scarves.
ReplyDeleteThanks! The striping yarn makes this look way more complicated than it actually was to make.

I wonder how striping yarn would work if crocheted? I can't handle two needles, my mind gets confused and I tend to lose count after 4 or 5 stitches. I'm a hooker through and through.
ReplyDeleteIf you're on Ravelry, you can see crocheted projects with the Bernat Mosaic here:

Thanks! I am on Ravelry but I've never posted anything. There was another SnarkyVegan on there so I am there as RealSnarkyVegan. As if I could get any worse ;-}
Deleteha ha! friended you back!
DeleteYou're my first Ravelry friend! Even though I designed the interface for a knitting design app for someone on Ravelry. You're still my first ;-x
DeleteThis is amazing! Absolutely love the rainbow stripe effect that you got going on there.
ReplyDeleteAlso, what a purdy Ms. Chicken!
Thanks Michelle!
DeleteHa, when this post showed up in my feed, I thought it said, “I Would Eat Yam,” and I thought, “Well that’s not news!”
ReplyDeleteThe sweater is stunning! and sounds like great fun! Good to know it can be made so inexpensively, too. I’ve been meaning to take a knitting class for the longest time… you inspire me.
Thanks Jain! I do hope you start that class, knitting is such a wonderful pastime. I really adore how it quiets my crazy brain and results in lovely things I can wear. I find making clothes so satisfying!
DeleteWow, my crazy brain needs to calm down, too. What a marvelous side effect! I'll do it.
DeleteYes!
DeleteI really need to learn how to progress past the rectangular stage so that I can make something as incredible at this! Such a cute and cozy looking sweater. What a great friend you have for finding that yarn for you!
ReplyDeleteBaby steps! I wish I could help you, I love getting folks onto sweaters. You can do it! Perhaps take a class at a local knitting shop, they often do beginning sweater courses.

Ahh, it's so so cute! I've been admiring self-striping yarns lately too, but mainly for socks. I love the way you used it here!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sarai! I was so happy that the Mosaic is a heavy worsted/aran weight yarn! Everything I have ever found has been fingering for sock knitters.

I am so jazzed that you found a Kureyon substitute!! That is awesome. I am totally going to use this stuff in the future instead of Kureyon =D
ReplyDeleteAwesome! So much less expensive too!
DeleteGorgeous sweater. Beautiful chicken. Wonderous thumbholes!
ReplyDeleteAgreed about the thumbholes. Extra credit.
DeleteThanks! I'm Thumb-holing the cardigan I'm working on too. I love them. I had a sweater in college that I bore holes through so I could wear like this.

I love the sweater!!! I too am always looking for vegan yarn, do you know a good alternative to worsted weight mohair? Either way, the sweater is really inspiring and I definitely have to check those yarns out!
ReplyDeleteDamn you, OpenID!! This comment was posted by me
DeleteHi!
DeleteNot offhand, but there might be a nylon one out there. Do you know about the yarn search on Ravelry? It's pretty in depth if you check on "advanced search." You can put in the weight and the fiber you want and it will give you some choices. Maybe some of the craft yarn at Michael's paired with a regular strand of acrylic???
I found one!
DeleteRed Heart Symphony!!
Worsted and brushed to look like Mohair. Check Etsy and Ebay too!

The end result sweater is so freaking cute! I love knitting too, and I'm luckily really prone to eczema from natural wool. *Allergy power!*
ReplyDeleteHa ha. Seriously check out the Bernat Mosaic, it is so damn pretty and comes in a million colorways.
DeleteSelf-striping yarn? I'm not sure what that means since your stripes seem (magically?) perfect. It's fab though, and so is the button on your hardly seen skirt!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Self striping yarn is yarn that changes colors all by itself. Normally, you'd have to use a million different pieces of yarn to get an effect like this, and then have a million and one ends to weave in at the end. None of that biz with this, plus the transition from color to color is really cool and blendy in the yarn.

It's gorgeous! I'm newly vegan and am dreading the day I've used up/worn out all my wool yarn and fabric - really appreciate posts about good alternatives.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous. I know and covet that Noro yarn, too--I used to knit with it in my pregan days. Good to know there is a sub. I think maybe I'll knit something to take my mind of my little Zelda.
ReplyDeleteIs that your chicken? She is so beautiful and sleek--like a chicken pinup girl.
I love it. Zella is a centerfold.
DeleteThat's my chicken. Which means she's more or less kittee's chicken god-daughter. Her name is Zella. She is a gold-laced wyandotte and she thanks you for recognizing her chicken sexiness.
ReplyDeleteShe is also the boniest full feathered gal around.
DeleteOh my God this is awesome! I must have some of this yarn quick-smart.
ReplyDeleteWow. I think this might just be the raddest, awesomest sweater I've ever seen!
ReplyDeleteIs there anything that your not good at? I'm starting to feel slightly inferior ;) That may be the most lovely sweater I've ever seen. I especially like the thumbholes :) xx
ReplyDeletethank you somer!
Deletethank you for this. a gorgeous sweater. i agree about vegan sweater hard to find. i am just getting into crochet and you are an inspiration. and great yarn resources. maybe someday I will knit too.
