Sugar Skull Sunday


That's not a glow, the skulls towards the back are a pinkish sherbert color.
We're doing November 2nd up big, so you'll probably be seeing lots of Day of the Dead activity while we prepare.

No smelling allowed.
This afternoon I put sugar skulls together and began to decorate them.  They'll be getting one or two more colors before the end.  These are made by pressing a mixture of  beet sugar, powdered egg replacer and water into a mold.

You can learn more about the process and find supplies here.  My super smart friend Katie taught me the vegan sugar skull trick- meringue powder can be replaced 1:1 with powdered Ener-G with awesome results.

I've also been sewing lots and lots of sugar skull pillow cases.  These are going on the couch and to some friends hither and tither.

  3. Oh boy oh boy! I love the Days of the Dead. Thanks for the tip about the skulls...now I feel inspired to try this!

    I got some awesome skullicious fabric in NYC which I used as a backdrop for a Mexican Tortilla Pie in my new cookbook. I think I may make napkins out of it. My poor sweing machine feels so neglected these days.

  4. PS: You mean Ener-G egg replacer powder can be used in the same proportion s meringue powder, right? Sorry if I'm being thick; my brain is all sugared out from eating too much pie :/

    1. yes! just use the powdered ener-g instead of the meringue powder in the same ratios.
