SMOTM: Canteen's Orange.

Amy and I hit up Canteen last week for a long overdue lunch date.  Since I was headed outta town, I ordered a smoothie (their bowls are more than one meal's worth, and I didn't want lefties).  Plus, my smoothies have sorta fallen into a boring format rut lately, so I was interested and eager to break out of my dud routine and try something new.

You can see Amy in the background diving into her Portland Bowl!  Go Amy, go!
I never put orange juice in mine at home, so I chose The Orange One, which was really nice.  Much more mellow than I was expecting.  I drank it way faster than Amy ate.

I forgot the vanilla, but that was in there, too.
Besides being a delicious snack, this smoothie made me realize I should get a glass straw.  Or a paper straw.  Or just straws, 'cuz sucking a thick drink up a straw is nice.

  2. Right, so I am going to Canteen next year for a smoothie and that bowl! And thanks so much for picking the orange smoothie because I have 3 oranges from our veggie box that are wasting away but now I am going to smoothie them up tomorrow!

    1. I think I'll join you Mandee! That looks super delicious. Kittee I've been wanting some glass straws for a while now, I amassed a collection of about 2000 plastic straws about 10 years ago (who knows why!) so I'm eagerly waiting for them to run out!

  3. If (I mean, when) I visit Portland, Canteen is on my list of eateries!

Your orange smoothie looks delicious! My Nina added several oranges to our shopping cart over the weekend just for making citrus smoothies. When Meyer lemons are in season, I always add half a lemon to the mix, too.

    1. I need to try! Do you use greens as well? I feel as though citrus does't really go well with spinach or kale...

    2. I can confirm that greens do NOT go well with citrus, not even green powder! Mango and pineapple are terrific add ins, especially if your smoothie is a bit too tart for your liking.

  4. I think we all fall into smoothie ruts, so it's always fun to taste someone else's take.

  6. I never add orange juice to my smoothies either, but it sounds super delicious! I highly recommend a glass straw. It makes drinking a smoothie feel like an elegant event. Plus, they're easy to clean. (Just use the tiny brush that comes with it for the inside, and throw it in the dishwasher if needed.) I recently drank out of a paper straw for the first time, and I'm not planning on repeating the experience. I felt like it was a lot of paper-taste per sip, and the mouthfeel wasn't as good. They're cute for photos, but I think I'll limit my use to that!

    1. I grew up using paper straws at the friend of my grandmother's, so they bring back memories!

  8. that's funny, I just bought a few oranges to experiment with putting oranges in my smoothies. It's not gonna be strawberry season here forever... and I need to plan for the winter smoothie situation!

also, I have a little box of colorful bendy straws in the back of one of my drawers. I think I've been making my way through that box for about 12 years. I don't use straws too often, but they are fun.

  10. Who needs a straw when you can roll up a fifty dollar bill. Use that.
Oh sorry you need a straw for something else like a smoothee like that delicious looking creamsicle smoothee. Those colors are so festive. Straws make drinks happy.

  11. I kind of like the impact of a thick smoothie on my lips, but glass straws are cool looking and I've always wanted one.

  13. I find it's very easy to fall into a smoothie rut meeself. But I love making them with oranges! Glass straws are the best - last Christmas Strawsome ran a deal and I bought a set, totally the best decision ever!

  14. Man, I love that orange smoothie. I need to figure out how to recreate it at home, though, or I'm going to start spending waaay too much money at Canteen.
