The other mornin' as I was strolling through Food Fight on one of my regular jaunts with good ol' Vee, I noticed Primal Strips has two flavors that have recently been reformulated to be XgfX (they switched out a wheaty soy sauce, for one without). I was really glad to chomp one, since the chewy is something that I greatly enjoy and don't find often these day (soy curls are yummy, but not super chewy the way seitan can be).

Top Row L-R: hot & spicy shiitake, xgfx hickory smoked soy and teriyaki seitan.
Bottom Row L-R: mesquite lime seitan, XgfX Texas BBQ soy and Thai peanut seitan.
When I got home, I picked a few strands of jerky from my front molar, then wrote to thank the company for being so awesome. I also asked them to please send me a free box of Primals to give away during The MoFo. They happily obliged me with a package filled up with six different kinds: XgfX, seitan, and mushroom varieties! My sharing plan is to give one away everyday I post, until the party runs dry. If you want one, lemme know in a comment, and dazee'll be my daily random generator (please make sure your comment contains a link or an email so I can track you down). Also, I want to save the gluten-free varieties for the gluten-free'rs, so please make yourself known when you comment--unless you are just dying for a gluten free flavor--no unhappy vegans during MoFo!
In other successful Monday news containing no wheat. I was recently loaned a galley copy of Flying Apron's Gluten-Free & Vegan Baking Book (soon to be released). I didn't have much hope for the book, since 1. I have a bad attitude about baking without wheat, and 2. I have a bad attitude about baking with xanthan gum, and 3. I have a bad attitude in general and 4. I felt personally burned by Babycakes.

Raspberry Cinnamon Scones, made with brown rice and garbanzo bean flours.
Scrounging through with wrinkled brow, I found a recipe for Blueberry Cinnamon Scones, which looked slightly promising. Since I had all the ingredients at hand and because the recipe calls for zero evil powder, I risked it. I swapped the blueberries for some really gorgeous and super-tasty-delicious golden raspberries we had stowed in the freezer, and the results were surprisingly good. Not exclamation point great, but still quite enjoyable. I know you can't see the berries in the picture, but their raspberry flavor is really bright.

I really need to give scones a chance. I always end up going for muffins. Especially if they have golden raspberries because come on, golden raspberries in anything is delightful.
ReplyDeleteIf you've got a primal stick burning a hole in your pocket you could send it to me and I'll eat it on a walk with my little doggie pal.
How funny! I was just thinking of doing a MoFo post on all the different kinds of vegan jerky type stuff (Primal Strips, Jerquee, Tofurky Jurky, etc.), if I have time at the end of the month.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to participate in your giveaway, kittee. Thanks!
OOH I would love a jerky sample! I also felt personally burned by Babycakes. Especially after tons of peeps were obviously having issues with the recipes, and their response was "UM OBVS U DONT KNOW HOW TO BAKE FOOLS ROFL." Pretty lame! We're cutting back on gluten in our house and we have a celiac friend to feed, so yeah. GF FTW.
ReplyDeleteThe scones look bright and shiny to me!
ReplyDeleteI was just at Flying Apron on Saturday and sampled the chocolate chip peanut butter cookies which I happen to really like. I also tried the personal pizza which was pleasant enough but not something you'd use to prove to someone that vegan gluten-free baking is really good, if you know what I mean.
ReplyDeleteXanthan gum is unappealing to me, too, ever since I read a description of it on Wikipedia. The one good thing about it as far as I can tell is you need very little to create the desired effect.
i'm super weirded out that primal strips were redesigned to double the amount of plastic packaging used. they were perfectly juicy/delicious before! *grumble*grumble*
ReplyDeleteWe love the BBQ flavor but it seems like that is a gluten free flavor and we don't have an intolerance/allergy :( And they are saved for people who are gluten free
ReplyDeleteOooh I have had primal strips a few times before and they are AWESOME! I totally know what you mean about them satisfying that craving for sink your teeth in chewiness. That scone looks beautiful!
ReplyDeletebabycakes gluten free cupcakes are awesome in real life. i think my flavor was the garbanzo/fava lemon cupcake with vanilla icing? or maybe the reverse?
ReplyDeleteI never had an opinion on xanthan gum until I read your rant the other day - now I'm scared! Heh.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to try a Primal Strip! I've never had anything like it. :)
i will take a chance on a primal strip!
ReplyDeleteglad you had a good experience with the scone!
I love number 3.
ReplyDeleteAnd if those jerky strip thingies can wing their way to España I'd be happy to have my name entered please.
Your bad attitude is fun!
ReplyDeletePlease enter me in your contest- I am not gluten-free :)
I've never tried a Primal Strip before. Sounds interesting!

I love Primal Stripes! did they change the packaging?!
ReplyDeleteI am a bit obsessed with primal strips but their newer packaging makes them even harder to open!!! I always have to use my teeth and then the p-strip usually flies out of the wrapper and onto the ground. It's so nice of you to give them away this month. You don't have to enter me in the contest because I live so close to Food Fight, but hooray for tasty snacks!!
ReplyDeletePretty scone.
I also shy away from gluten free baking, but I've just found out that I should try to cut out wheat for a thyroid condition. I'm fighting it, but I feel like it's going to eventually happen. Your xantham gum rant made me so happy! And hearing there are things like gluten free primal strips makes me realize it might not be as hard as I'm thinking it will be...
ReplyDeleteI love primal strips! Yum!
ReplyDeleteAnd yay for decent scones
I love scones, I actually should try and make a 'cheese' scone, as they were always my favourite!
ReplyDeleteI'd love a chance to win some of those primal strips, they look good :D
I spotted some gluten free AP flour today, but had to put it down after your post on xantham gum. Brr.
ReplyDeleteMesquite lime sounds delicious!
ReplyDeleteHi Kittee, I would like a XgfX primal strip please, because I am pathetic and sad so I deserve it. That your brown rice/garbanzo scone was even edible gives me hope. Maybe I will buy that baking book.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Mary (aka mittenmacher)
I bet golden raspberries are so good in scones! I've only ever baked gluten-free once, and it was a mix, so I am amazed by your creation.
ReplyDeleteAnd I would like to be in the running for the primal strips. I love those little buggers!
Kittee, I was the undeserving beneficiary of one of your lovely golden raspberry scones, and it totally made my day.
ReplyDeleteThis is Hope, by the way. Speranza is my gf baking nom de plume--er, nom de pan.
ReplyDeleteKittee, I too felt burned by Babycakes. You are not alone.
ReplyDeletePRIMAL STRIPS ARE DA BEST.
ReplyDeleteAhem. Anyway, that's so exciting that the Flying Apron is coming out with a book - I had no idea - because it is one of my absolute favorite bakeries in Seattle. I rarely make it up there... but their sweets are spirit-inducing. I want that scone pretty bad.
I just found out I can get them these babies semi-locally! Woot! Can't wait to try them!
ReplyDeleteI <3 vegan jerky! count me in!
ReplyDeleteI would love to try any of the primal strips! I'm not gluten-free. The only kind I have tried so far was the hickory smoked, which is gf and was amazing.
ReplyDeletePrimal Strips make me say, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah! yum.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your scones turned out, even if they weren't !!!
I have Celiac! I miss chewy things! Please send gluten free primal strips that I can pick out of MY molars!
ReplyDeleteOOOOO I'd love a chance to win!
ReplyDeleteI've been eyeing those Primal Strips at my local health food store for a while and would love to win a package.
ReplyDeleteIf you have any teriyaki seitan primal strips laying around I would sure like one for my 3:00 starvation bell at work. :o)
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to try Primal Strips, but haven't been able to find them in my area and I'm not committed enough to buy a 24 pack online...hook me up!
ReplyDeleteA XgfX primal strip would be lovely, please and thank you!
ReplyDeleteI wanna try one. I eat the gluten, I love the gluten, no gluten-free for me.
