Don't cry for me Vegan Mofo. The truth is I never left you.

I've been hanging out all day waiting for the UPS guy to come around so I could chop off his head and bring his brains to a bonfire tonight.

UPS brains made of coconut milk, sugar, food color paste, agar, rainbow boba (tapioca pearls) and gummi worms. What.
Awww, don't be sad for him, all you little titty babies! His time was almost out anyhow, he was like in his mid 40s or something. As you can see, his brain was full of worms, really stinky necrotic tissue and clots. Lots and lots of clots. How do you get the smell of stinky rotten brains out of your kitchen? The Febreze isn't really doing the trick, and dazee is due home from work any time now...

And then after we butchered the delivery guy, I made more sushi!

Swedish fish nigiri.

Fruit leather futomaki
Gunkan sushi with tapioca pearls.
The sushi were so fun to make! All of these Halloween treats have put me in such a good mood today, f'realz, you should make these sometime, but only if you want to get happy. They would really piss me off if I wanted to be Mr. Grumpy-Man.

So, I used this recipe, with a box of puffed brown rice to make the sushi bases, and since it made a shit ton, I wouldn't recommend doubling this recipe, unless you have a zombie army to help you eat and prepare 'em. I used yucky corn syrup, 'cuz I'm trashy and had some in the cupboard I needed to use up. If you have money to burn, you could experiment with a combo of brown rice syrup and agave, and I bet it would work marvelously--maybe even try some maple all ye Northerners. For the futomaki, I actually used a sushi mat and made the rolls just like I would for regular sushi, using candy for the fillings. The rice mixture stays warm for about an hour, so as long as you have everything in place before you begin, you'll have time to get everything formed before they begin to set.

After you form the candy into tight rolls, wrap them tightly in tin foil or waxed paper to keep their shape, and refrigerate overnight until very firm. Once chilled thoroughly, I sliced them into 3/4" rounds and then cut fruit leather into strips and wrapped them around the pieces individually.
For the nigiri, I used a cheap mold I found for a buck at Hong Kong Market. This worked great, there's a little flap in the back, so once you squeeze the rice candy into shape, you just push and they pop right out! I topped the nigiri with a combo of Swedish fish, vegan jello, and dried papaya spears. The gunkan rolls will get topped off before I leave for the party, so they don't get soggy. I'm planning on using some tapioca I boiled with sugar and coconut milk, but you could squirt some buttercream into them and top with jimmies for a good effect.

Happy Halloween!

  23. One of the UPS guys around these parts stole my beloved vintage Schwinn bicycle off of my porch, so I completely identify with the desire to dissect and consume UPS brains! I, however, did not have the guts to do it, so he is still roaming free.

    Your candy sushi is BEAUTIFUL.
