What's old is new.

Do you ever listen to sad songs when you feel sad to feel better? I've been listening to Kimya Dawson's It's Been Raining pretty much non stop for the last little while, and it's definitely made me feel a little more connected. Thanks, Kimya!

I've embedded the song below for anyone else who needs to feel sad to feel better. Since it won't take you away from this page if you play it, go ahead, this post is supposed to have a soundtrack...

Some of you know, and some of you will be surprised to know, dazee and I are planning a move soon to Portland, OR. Dazee passed the bar in February, so we're clear to go as soon as we sell our lovely little NOLA home. I've been up to my ears in "white linen" latex paint lately, so I thought it might be fun to take a break to walk down memory lane. Just to clarify, since I'm getting a few posts about my sad mood, I'm doing OK, just got some bad news from my hometown DC, that I am working through. I'm OK and feeling aok about the move.

Here's what the garden looked like when we first moved in.

Here's a picture that Mr. $$ took last week, it's the same corner of the yard. That is a hyacinth bean vine you see growing mad everywhere...

And then these two from June...

Again the same corner for reference...

And some inside shots!
The kitchen when we first bought the house, look at the sparkling floor!

And again, last week from Mr. $$, just before the turquoise went bubbye (that's sweet Ana hiding behind the rubber tree!).

  1. Wow I just found your blog and I must say: I like your style! My bedroom is a similar shade of turquoise. I bet your new place will be even more amazing... but for now I plan to steal some of your garden ideas!

    Thanks for the inspiration!

Good luck on your move to Portland!
All my family members seem to be moving there, so I see a trip to visit in my future. :-)

  8. I would move into your place and leave everything as it is, if I lived nearby! Really beautiful and creative.
    Just curious -
Which kinds are the plants that you are growing in bottles?

  9. Hey Mihl,
The glass bottles are used to help tier that bed, but weeds grow up through them! It's pretty cool looking, but regularly, I just lift the bottles up and pull out whatever's growing in them...

    Weeds are tough!

I'm glad y'all are enjoying Kimya.

  10. Everything in your world is sooo cute! I love the plates in the garden and the kitchen is, like, my dream kitchen! I love all the colorful vintage decor and that table! Wow!

Sucks to have to leave that behind, but you are moving to the VEGAN MECCA! You lucky girl! I'm a little jealous!

  14. I don't want to be a bummer, but I am hugely bummed that you are moving from NOLA :(((
It was way more possible that I would make it out to New Orleans one day to visit much more than Oregon...although I love Portland too. Oh welly wells. I'm sure you will love it.

  17. I'm sorry to hear you're going through a rough patch, but I'm awfully glad you'll soon be a local. I think Portland will be a perfect fit for you and Dazee. I love love love your kitchen. It's hard to imagine anyone could ever be sad in a kitchen that cute.

  18. Kittee-
I feel for you on the sad/sad news front, I've been dealing with that this summer too. Moving is stressful and you are leaving a beautiful home and garden behind but I bet you will love cooking and gardening here in Portland! Welcome in advance!

  19. wow!
    That kitchen is looking RAD!
it's like a dream come true!

I'm really excited for you both.

  21. I hear you on the sad songs thing. Sometimes nothing else is as comforting.

I'm moving soon too. Congratulations to dazee, and good luck! Even when it's time, moving is stressful.

  22. I am so excited that you're moving here soon! It really is awesome. We don't have very cool bugs here to eat all your plants though. Just aphids and slugs.

Your (old) kitchen is my idea of heaven, by the way. I'm tired of living in rentals that don't allow painting. Boring white it is!

I wish you nothing but happiness!

    Love,
    Destiny

  23. Aww Kittee--you're going to Oregon too? I'm just gonna have to get my butt up there someday...I've heard great stuff about the gardening weather (the weather in general!)
I've seen your kitchen (and I'm thoroughly jealous--I love that lampshade and the colors), but I am EXTREMELY jealous of your garden! I hope to be able to turn my bare backyard into something like that. The plates along the bed edges are such a great idea! (I <3 the ones with the circle of orange flowers...I would love some like those for actual eating plates!)
Good luck to you and Dazee in Portland...enjoy the lovely, not-100-degree-and-99%-humidity greenness up there. :)

  24. I love love love your kitchen and your back garden!

Sorry that you are feeling a little bummed, I agree - music totally helps...I quite dig a bit of J.Cash when I have the blues. That, and chocolate.

    Be well!

  25. Hey Kittee,

I hope you're feeling better soon!

Your kitchen and garden are the coolest, and I can only imagine how gorgeous your Portland dis will be! Good luck with selling the house. Hopefully you'll be in Portland in no time at all.

  27. Congrats on the move! I'm about to make a big across-the-country one myself so I feel your Kimya. I mean your pain. At least you're moving to what seems like the most vegan-centric place in the US - and I hope you have a place with as beautiful and fun a kitchen as you have in Louisiana!

  28. Sad song, Kittee. You did amazing things with that cute house.

    Love to you.xo

Thinking much good house-selling luck your way...

  39. I'm sitting here, checking Wunderground for Gustav updates, hoping that my parents don't get flattened by their pine trees, and started wondering if you'd evacuated so dropped in to your blog for the first time in a few weeks. I'm happy for you that you're moving to Portland but sad that it decreases the likelihood that we'll get to meet! If you're coming through Jackson before you leave, let me know and we can do a meet-up. (Bring Dazee and he can talk law stuff with my husband, who does death penalty appeals.)

Sorry about your bad news, and hope that you're holed up somewhere safe.
